A pregnant Ember and her husband, Ash, travel south along the Dividing River to the Messoland Lake to escape the she-wolf, Nova, and her wolf pack. Along the way, they meet some old friends, face icy weather conditions, and confront a black bear. The story ends with a battle on the frozen lake between the foxes, the wolf pack, and a black bear.
