Introduction
Obesity, also known as corpulence or fatness, is an excessive accumulation of body fat that is typically brought on by eating more calories than the body needs. Adipose tissue, or fat, is where the extra calories end up. Even if you're not obese, being overweight doesn't necessarily mean you're obese, especially if you're big-boned or muscular.
An increase in body weight that was greater than 20% of an individual's ideal body weight-the weight that is associated with the lowest risk of death, as determined by certain factors like age, height, and gender-was traditionally used to define obesity.
