Faythe finds refuge and friendship with three women at a
boarding house in Briarcliff and begins to plot her revenge. She seduces the
minister of the town as part of her plot but finds herself instead falling in
love with him. Warner Mertens, an extraordinary but aging fighter who is loyal
to the minister, joins Faythe in pursuing vengeance against the Downings.
