Description

Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse written by English poet John Milton in 1667. Paradise Lost is considered by critics to be John Milton's major work, and it helped solidify his reputation as one of the greatest English poets of all time. The poem concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. John Milton's purpose as he stated is to "justify the ways of God to men." Also included in this anthology volume of John Milton's work is Paradise Regained which is another poem written by English poet John Milton in 1671. Paradise Regained is connected by name to John Milton's earlier and more famous epic poem Paradise Lost, with which it shares similar theological themes; such as its title, its use of blank verse, and its progression through Christian history. However, Paradise Lost deals primarily with the temptation of Christ as recounted in the Gospel of Luke. John Milton's poetry encompasses literature & fiction, he was a polemicist, and a man of letters. The British poet's work is often required textbook reading in many English courses as well as many courses in ancient, classical & medieval studies.
