This cleverly constructed contemporary fantasy novel is more about womanhood, sisterhood, and self-identity that it is about romance, magic, or drama--though it has all of that in spades. Dawson explores the complexities of modern feminism with particular poignancy through the eyes of four friends who took an oath as young girls to join Her Majesty's Royal Coven. Time, history, and ultimately the choices these women make tear them apart or bring them closer together. This cauldron's brew of a novel mixes how foundational friendships age, questions of diversity and inclusion, as well as dazzling magic. This book is the start of a trilogy and I can't wait for the next!
This is by far the best sci-fi book I've read this year. The prose is lyrical. These two dissimilar worlds are artfully painted and brought to life. Where so many time-traveling stories trip over themselves, this novel makes the uncoupling craziness of time-traveling the central point. All this crazy is grounded in the simplicity of two lovers/rivals in war passing letters to each other amid the chaos. Red and Blue are two agents working for opposing sides in a time war waged across a thousand realities, through all of time. What begins as a fun and risky tête-à-tête, blossoms into a yearning love that will leave you wanting more after the last page.
