About the Author


JOHN L. BULL, a self-taught ornithologist and popular field-guide writer, was born in Manhattan on February 28, 1914. He served as a research asisstant at the American Museum of Natural History in the 1960s and 70s, and led many birding tours in Long Island and New York City. He died in August 2006 at the age of ninety-two. 

JOHN FARRAND, JR. (1937-1994) studied at the University of Oklahoma and Louisiana State University. He served as Zoologist at the Smithsonian and was a curatorial assistant at the American Museum of Natural History.
